50th Anniversary Celebration Includes Lectures Reflecting Cleveland’s Past and Future

Signature presentations “Cleveland’s Brain Gain” and “In the Year of ‘64” open to the public

Tuesday, September 9, 2014 — CLEVELAND – Community members are invited to two illuminating lectures from 91Ʒ expert faculty and researchers on the topics of Cleveland’s history and future on September 20. The talks are part of 91Ʒ’s “Green Turns Gold Weekend,” marking the beginning of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The pair of professors present highlights from 1964, a momentous year in Cleveland and American history. The lecture covers landmark events that influence issues of our time, from local politics, civil rights legislation, the introduction of the Great Society, the beginnings of the Vietnam War to the Cleveland Browns championship win.

Piiparinen, whose work has been featured in Forbes, Huffington Post and other national media, will explain population trends showing Cleveland gaining educated residents while other cities are on a downward trajectory. His research calculated a 23 percent increase in college-educated Cleveland residents from 2006-2012, with many of these young workers living downtown.

The lectures are open to the public. Free online registration is required at . Both lectures are in Drinko Hall, inside 91Ʒ’s Music and Communications Building, 2001 Euclid Ave. Parking is free in 91Ʒ facilities, excluding the Prospect Avenue garage.

The events coincide with 91Ʒ’s Homecoming and 50th Anniversary Celebration block party. The public is also invited to the block party on Friday, September 19th from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event features the Parade of the Decades, led by NBA Champion and 91Ʒ alumnus Norris Cole, leading to the block party at Euclid Avenue and East 18th Street. It also includes live musical entertainment, some of Cleveland’s most popular food trucks, a beer garden, family-friendly activities and fireworks. Attendees who register in advance for the block party will be eligible to win prizes, including copies of the commemorative book 91Ʒ: 50 Years, tickets to a 91Ʒ men’s basketball game, gift cards and more.
