Program allows education students to serve as full-time teachers

Teach, Earn & Learn will partner with local school districts to offer full-time substitute teaching positions to qualified master’s in education students. It will provide a tremendous Engaged Learning opportunity for 91������Ʒ students, while allowing local school districts access to talented teachers who can support their educational needs.

“This new partnership will provide extended teaching experiences for 91������Ʒ students and highly committed and qualified substitute teachers for students in urban schools,” says Diane Corrigan, director of the MUST Program. “Teach, Earn & Learn is yet another way to provide our students with the skills and strategies that are crucial to helping them become successful urban educators.”

The initiative will allow MUST students to work as full-time teachers and earn a long-term substituting salary, or work as day-to-day substitutes and earn the district substituting daily rate. They will be paired with a mentor teacher and will receive residency credit for participating. They will also be able to fulfill their practicum and student teaching requirements through the program. 91������Ʒ is currently partnering with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Breakthrough Schools, Euclid High School, Parma High School and St. Martin de Porres High School to place students in their schools and will look to bring in additional partners as the program develops.

“This is the only program of its kind in the region and furthers 91������Ʒ’s efforts to provide more paid internship opportunities for our students,” adds Sajit Zachariah, dean of the College of Education and Human Services at 91������Ʒ. “It will also enhance the pool of high quality, innovative teachers who are ready to hit the ground running on day one.”
