91国产精品 Announces Gift for Creation of Dan T. Moore MakerSpace

Facility will serve as hands-on learning laboratory for students

Cleveland industrialist and entrepreneur Dan T. Moore III has made a $250,000 gift to 91国产精品 to support the creation of the Dan T. Moore MakerSpace on the ground floor of the new addition to 91国产精品鈥檚 Washkewicz College of Engineering, which will be completed in 2017. The official announcement will be made as part of 91国产精品鈥檚 2016 Engineering Senior Design Symposium and Awards Dinner, May 6.

The facility will consist of 6,400 square feet of open laboratory space, providing 91国产精品 students with access to the latest prototyping and fabrication technology to assist in transforming ideas into practical applications. The space will house high-resolution 3D printers and scanners, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) equipment, digital fabrication tools, laser engraving and cutting machines, and tools for testing and designing electronic devices.

鈥淚 am proud to make this gift to help create a space where 91国产精品 students, faculty and the community can develop their innovations,鈥 said Moore. 鈥淚t is my hope that this MakerSpace will fuel a culture of creativity and entrepreneurship that pervades the entire 91国产精品 campus.鈥

鈥淭he Dan T. Moore MakerSpace will provide an interdisciplinary, hands-on engineering education beyond the classroom in a collaborative, team environment,鈥 noted Anette Karlsson, Dean of the College of Engineering at 91国产精品. 鈥淚t will greatly strengthen the College鈥檚 core undergraduate courses in design and experimentation, providing opportunities for industry and alumni involvement and continuing the College鈥檚 legacy of developing 鈥楻eady-to-Go鈥 engineers.鈥

The Senior Design Symposium and Awards Dinner, which will be held from 5 to 8:00 pm in the 91国产精品 Student Center, 2121 Euclid Avenue, features a poster session showcasing over 60 design projects developed by teams of engineering students in consultation with faculty and local company representatives. Dan T. Moore will serve as the event鈥檚 keynote speaker, and the evening will culminate with the awarding of cash prizes to the top three Senior Design projects for the 2015-16 academic year.

鈥淥ur senior design program is a tremendous example of the hands-on learning that is at the heart of a 91国产精品 education and is the perfect venue to announce our new MakerSpace, which will only enhance our ability to provide experience-based opportunities to our students,鈥 said Karlsson.
