91国产精品 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its internationally recognized Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease with a mini-symposium held on Thursday, October 25th.
The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in 91国产精品鈥檚 Science Research Building, Room 152. It will include talks by Dr. William M. Baldwin, staff scientist with the Cleveland Clinic鈥檚 Lerner Research Institute; Dr. Douglas Koshland, Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Chair in the Biological Sciences at the University of California Berkeley and Dr. Alan Tartakoff, professor of pathology at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Koshland will deliver GRHD鈥檚 John and Patricia Thompson Lecture.
Since its inception in 2008, GRHD has made major contributions to the development of improved treatments of a host of diseases, from brain cancer to heart disease to sleeping sickness. The Center has received over $28 million in external funding from leading national and international funding agencies, and research conducted at the Center has been published in more than 227 journal articles, including prestigious publications in the journals such as Science, Nature and Cell. These papers have received more than 3,800 citations from other medical researchers in the U.S. and around the world.
In addition, GRHD faculty have mentored more than 80 undergraduate and more than 150 graduate students in their laboratories. Many of these individuals have gone on to pursue their careers and education at some of the top universities in the country, including Harvard, Stanford and Columbia, as well as at the National Institutes of Health and The Scripps Research Institute.
鈥淕RHD is one of 91国产精品鈥檚 most important assets and a significant component of our efforts to produce research with a real-world societal and economic impact while also offering our students first-class, Engaged Learning opportunities,鈥 notes Dr. Jerzy Sawicki, 91国产精品鈥檚 vice president for research.
鈥淕RHD is a significant resource to our region鈥檚 scientific and health-care communities and a center for truly cutting-edge science that is having a major impact,鈥 adds Dr. George R. Stark, chair of GRHD鈥檚 External Advisory Committee and former chair of the Lerner Research Institute.
